Whyter out door in-cabinet ice maker
I purchased this unit almost 6 months ago and was extremely happy with its performance, but then it stopped working. Since we were going away for several weeks, I shut it off. When we returned, I turned it back on and checked on it several hours later and it was back making ice again. Just prior to dinner, I opened up the ice maker door and steam poured out. It red hot inside and the ice bucket was filled with water. After a quick call to Amazon, they told me it was a 3rd party sale and would get me over to Whyter technical support. I was all set for a “sorry I can’t help you”. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to speak to very lovely person who politely.asked me to explain the problem and take a few pictures of the front & back of the unit and include the purchase & shipping info. She then asked if I would remove it from the cabinet, plug it in and have it go through one ice making cycle and call her back. I called her back and tol her that it did not get hot or cold. It appeared to be dead. She thanked for the info, asked for my shipping address and said they would ship me out a new one within the next few days. A day later she e-mailed me to tell me the unit was ready for pick up and the next day she told me that it was picked up and gave me the tracking info. You never like having a problem with your purchase, but it’s not often that you can say that getting a resolution was quick, efficient and painless. It was. Thank you, Whyter,

Second unit failed
Unit was great while it lasted for two years. It failed. Warranty purchased stated we had to have the original packaging to send it back, but we were able to make do with our own packaging. They sent a different unit after a month that was clearly reconditioned. It functioned at about 50% capacity of the original one. We would frequently have to defrost the unit and now the unit just won't produce ice. Compressor still works, and you can store popsicles in it, but it won't make ice.

Install the unit correctly! Whynter provided good service.
After reading quite a few reviews of these inexpensive ice-makers, I agree with the person who I read that addressed a number of common complaints with these units: noise, poor ice-making performance, and durability. If one installs the unit on a solid level surface, noise is minimal. If one installs the unit such that air can flow around the unit and through the coils, then good performance can be expected. If one installs a water filter in line with the unit and keeps the filter serviced, one can expect good performance and longer life. The reason that I gave four stars instead of five was that my unit had a problem with the ice-maker when I received it. It would make a partial bucket of ice and quit. Then the unit would have to be defrosted to free up the mechanism, before another partial bucket would be made. I contacted Whynter, and within a reasonable time they sent me a new ice-maker, which was relatively easy to replace. They offered to let me return the whole unit, but since the cooling portion was working fine, I figured I had a better chance of a good unit by not shipping the unit back and forth across the country. Since producing a product that is perfect each and every time is not possible, I recommend Whynter because they promptly helped me with my issue.

Dependable, quiet and way better than other brands.
This is my 3rd one. The ice maker just keeps chucking out cubes. It's actually more than we can use. I push up the wire bar to stop the automatic ice maker. The only reason I bought this one was because I broke the last one by putting an ice bag into it to keep the bagged ice frozen. The machine was in the auto mode and it kept trying to make ice. The Ice bag jammed the mechanism. It was my fault not the machine.Terence R.

Great ice maker - but died after 2 years
I searched and searched everywhere for a drain-less, under counter ice maker, and this was the only model I could find. So I bought it and installed in my wet bar. Installation was easy - just used a standard ice maker hose (like you use on a refrigerator) and plug it in to an electrical socket. The first day, it filled up completely within 24 hours. After several months, it is running great. The ice is in half-moon shaped cubes, and is somewhat soft. The compressor kicks on periodically to keep it frozen, but since I have it under the counter, I barely hear it (I don't hear it at all when the TV is on). When full, it holds a decent amount of ice (I'd say about one Igloo Playmate cooler full).I can't believe these are not more popular. I don't understand why all other ice makers have drains - so you make the ice, then slowly watch it melt away. Not efficient and the potential for plumbing/leak issues is high. This little ice maker is simple, easy, and cheap. Highly recommend.UPDATE: Bought in 10/2013, in 05/2016 it died. Started making very loud rattling noises any time the compressor kicked on. I took it apart and reassembled, finding nothing loose. That stopped the rattling for half a day, then it began again. It is something inside the sealed refrigerant system, so I can't repair it. Had to throw it out. Should have figured it would not last long given the price compared to competitors. Ran perfectly up till then, so if you're willing to buy something you know will die 2 years later, buy it. Lowering from 5 to 3 stars due to lifespan.
