Saved a bunch of money by installing it myself

Our KitchenAid refrigerator stopped making ice cubes a couple weeks ago. After watching a few diagnostic youtube videos I figured it was the ice maker itself that was broken. I went on Amazon and ordered this replacement. I did a search for installation videos and found one for a similar Kitchenaid model. iPad in one hand, screwdriver in the other, it all went together as expected. But after 24 hours, still no ice. So this morning we pushed back the frig, took off the back, and checked the water supply lines, inlet valve and whatever else we could think of. But nothing appeared to be broken. So I took the ice maker out again, checked all the connections and put it back in. Then I remembered the wire lever thingy that was included (not shown in the photo and not part of the old ice maker) and that the instructions said wasn't needed on all models. When installed, the lever has two positions, up and down or on and off. So I put it on and pulled it down (in the on position, duh!) and ice started. My husband said it wasn't worth the time spent, but the satisfaction of fixing it ourselves made it worthwhile to me. We have different philosophies on fixing things. I will call a plumber if there's a foot of water on the floor. If not, I'll try fixing it myself first and then if all else fails, call a plumber. Plus, I probably saved over $150 doing it myself. The actual installation took about 15 minutes. I had never replaced an ice maker before nor had any idea of how they worked before Googling it and watching the youtube videos. I had never even lifted the cover and looked at the darn thing before. The most time consuming part was removing a flip down plastic ice maker cover that snaps on, part of the frig, not this unit. The hinges where you snap off the cover are small and I was afraid of breaking them so I stopped a couple times and finally asked my husband to remove it. Better he should break it than me! (He didn't break it and it came off easily for him.) I had to unscrew a bottom tray from the old ice maker and attach it to this one. That was simple and straightforward. Not realizing that wire lever thingy had to be in the down position was the only hang-up. I removed it after pulling it down to start the ice maker. (I could have used a screwdriver or pliers to turn the little thing the lever attaches to, but I had already put them away.) The ice maker is working perfectly now. This ice maker works with a LOT of different model refrigerators, like Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid and Kenmore. I asked a question in the above question section and received a reply the next day. You can see pages of different models it works with. We have a Kitchen Aid KSCS25INWH00. It's a side by side, freezer on the left and frig on the right.

Easy install. Clean ice again (yay!)

Works just fine. My original ice maker had a yellowish non-stick coating that started flaking off after roughly 5-6 years and constantly caused floaters in my drinks. The coating on this one is more of a slippery white paint coating. Hopefully it holds up to time. If it begins to break down, it will be harder to detect but I know how to inspect better now and will update if the coating starts to flake off. I’ve read many reviews for these ice makers as well as the ice level detection sensors and this Supco brand seems to get typically high marks. For now I’m thrilled to have clean ice again. Fit was fine and install was easy (I did have to swap the water inlet cup with my original which was taller and bigger than what came with this unit.). A quick YouTube video showed how to do that ( 5 minutes).

New but missing a component

New, works well. Did not include the wire switch bar. Keep your old one to use on this one if replacing a unit.

Easy to install and makes loads of ice!

I've been thinking it's kind of weird writing a review for an ice maker, but I read reviews before ordering it so... I honestly can't even remember what brand our refrigerator is. I hadn't previously considered that ice makers weren't a universal fit item because this is actually the second ice maker I've replaced in our current freezer. The heater element seems to die before anything else, then the arm can't scoop the ice cubes out of the ice maker. The first time it happened, I took the ice maker out of our garage refrigerator/freezer since it's not connected to water. That solved the problem for MANY years. Recently the old replacement ice maker died, heating element stopped heating, so we weren't getting ice. This is fairly close to an emergency situation in our house because I have two pet ducks who love eating ice cubes from their water dish. They have fairly dramatic temper tantrums if they don't get their ice. I took a chance on this and hoped it would fit. It arrived quickly, fit perfectly, and was very easy to install. I didn't take the time to actually pull my refrigerator out to unplug it before installing this...not a great idea because the heating element starts getting warm as soon as you plug it in, which you need to do before screwing the ice maker to the freezer. It gets pretty warm in your hand while you're fumbling with screws trying to work quickly. As I was working trying to get the ice maker installed, my bratty ducks were biting at my legs, quacking happily as they begged for ice cubes. They didn't care that the ice maker needed to get cold before it could make ice. I expected to have to deal with their tantrums for another 24 hours after installing it. We were very excited to hear ice cubes tumble into the ice bin less than 6 hours later! I don't understand how or why this machine makes SO many ice cubes, but it boarders on excessive. They caused a jam in the ice maker, too many cubes piled up and froze to the ice maker. It was a little ridiculous. But the ducks will happily eat any extra cubes so, problem solved.
