In this witty, satirical farce, secretaries Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and office manager Lily Tomlin live every female worker's dream after discovering they share the same resentment towards their egotistical, sexist boss (Dabney Coleman). When they get an unexpected chance to take revenge, they turn their male controlled workplace into a modle office - even as their scheme spins wildly out of control. Review: This is a classic movie that everyone should see! - I really loved this movie, I think I should have bought it instead of just renting it. I'd want to watch it several more times! The cast is incredible, the pace is fast, very funny and cleverly written plot. Review: great movie! - just watched this movie for the first time and it holds up even after 30 years! hilarious!

9 to 5 - Sexist, Egotistical, Lying Hypocritical Bigot Edition
Even though the office equipment used in this movie has gone out of style, the comedy still packs a punch! This special edition DVD also has some nice extras celebrating the most famous office comedy of the bunch. What a combo! Fonda, Tomlin, and Parton...who could have ever imagined that one (watch the DVD and you'll see how Fonda herself came up with the casting one enchanted evening). When this movie was made (1980), the office secretary had no respect. As Fonda points out in the DVD's featurette, the best way to address serious issues and get them out to a large audience is through comedy. This one succeeds on all levels. Judy (Fonda) has just been dumped by her husband...for his secretary. To pay the bills, she takes a job as (what else?) a secretary at the Consolidated Corporation. No-nonsense office manager Violet (Tomlin) trains Judy and passes on some of her frustration at always getting "leap-frogged" over for promotions by the good-ol'-boys network, headed by her sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical boss, Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman). Hart's personal secretary, Doralee (Parton), has made no friends in the steno pool because Hart has let it "leak" that the two are having an affair; the rest of the girls shun her for this. When Violet accidentally pours rat poison into her boss' coffee instead of Skinny & Sweet, the antics begin and the office will never be the same as all 3 girls band together to make some changes. Casting is amazing; Coleman is letter perfect as the slime-ball boss. Parton hits a home-run in her first movie as the heart-of-gold southern secretary who doesn't stand for bull-s&*t. Tomlin is excellent as Violet, especially in a fantasy sequence as a surreal Snow-White. Fonda is totally believeable as the clumsy defenseless woman dumped by a husband who is forced to fend for herself. Extras include: commentary track with all Fonda, Tomlin, & Parton. Fonda is a little overbearing and is actually told to shut-up at one point. However, much of the excitement is due to how proud all three feel about this film, and how much fun they had making it. Not a lot of behind-the-scenes info, but just hearing the 3 together again is tons of fun. The featurette on the making-of again has all 3 reminiscing about the making of the movie, and includes flubs as well as how the movie came to be. A featurette on Writer/Director Colin Higgins is touching (Higgins has passed away), and all three leads agree on one thing: what a comically gifted and sweet man he was. It is obvious that much of "9 to 5"'s success is due to him. They all credit him for his humor and timing and belief in the project. A few deleted scenes, a gag reel (some of the footage also appears in the documentaries), theatrical trailer, and a karaoke version of the hit title tune round out this excellent DVD. DEFINITELY one for your comedy collection!

9 to 5 is exciting, comedic, entertaining, power-to-the-people movie. One of the 1980s best!!
This movie is exciting, comedic, entertaining, dramatic in a "down-to-Earth" sort of way and one of the best to come out of the 1980s. First of all, Lily Tomlin is in her finest form in this film. Her character "Violet Newstead" is a widowed mother raising four kids and despite working for a company for 12 years she still hasn't been given the position she richly deserves. I absolutely love her in this role. Dolly Parton is one hell of a great human being and I can't imagine anyone not at least respecting her for her accomplishments if not her musical talent. Her character is named "Doralee Rhodes". She is the boss' very shapely and beautiful secretary who is unfairly ostracized by her co-workers under the assumption that she's having an affair with her boss. Jane Fonda again delivers as the character "Judy Bernly". A bumbling, uptight recent divorcee who, having been a stay at home housewife for many years and with little work experience, enters the workfield and is hired by the same company. Violet, Doralee and Judy become fast friends while trying to navigate the male dominated world of business. They complain extensively about their boss, Mr. Hart, played by Dabney Coleman. Hart is a chauvinistic pig forever trying to coax Doralee into an affair.(SPOILER ALERT-SPOILER ALERT) One day at work, Violet discovers that the promotion Hart promised to her was given to a male employee. Later while getting coffee for Hart, Violet accidently uses rat poison for the sweetner. By the time she realises her mistake she assumes Hart had drank it. In a panic she confides to Doralee and Judy about the mistake. At that same time, unbeknownst to the three women, Hart, while getting ready to drink the laced coffee, leaned too far back in his chair and fell hitting his head on the desk and knocking himself out cold. He is taken to the hospital but Violet, not knowing he hit his head, assumes he drank the poison and is dead or dying enroute. From this point on it's one wrong assumption after the other until the final climax where the three women get the recognition they deserve . It's a "power-to-the-people" movie that most everyone will love. I love "9 to 5" and in my opinion, Tomlin, Parton and Fonda are "pure gold" in this movie. It's a classic that everyone should have in their collection. I can't say enough good things about this movie. I very highly recommend it!
