Perfect Home Shop Tool

The Rockwell 3Rill drill-driver is a great addition to the shop. lt's powerful, flexible, light, perfectly sculpted to the hand, for lefties or righties. The speed/impact selector and speed reducer click solidly. The torque clutch has a wide, useful range of adjustment. We use the 3Rill as a production tool in the shop, and it is a flexible, useful addition. Others have criticized the precision of the chuck for drilling, and all I can say is, choose the right tool for the job. Yes, there's deflection, but you can still drill a clean hole in center-punched steel. If you need more precision, use a drill press, not a handheld tool. The 3Rill charger recharges the lithium-ion batteries quickly, and I appreciate that Rockwell includes two batteries in the basic kit--it makes the 3Rill an all-day tool. I also like the USB port on the charger--you can recharge your phone on-site or save one position on the power strip. It's a nice touch. The tool bag is rugged and spacious, with Velcro retainers for the drill and charger, and a zippered pocket for other accessories.

Great multipurpose tool for your toolbox.

This is the perfect multi-purpose drill/driver to live in my tool bucket. I use other drills for other applications depending on the need, but for general handyman type of jobs, this thing is perfect. It comes with 2 batteries and a charger so I always have a charged battery in the drill, and Rockwell has the lifetime battery program. The size is perfect and will fit into most places I need it to. I have used all the functions on the drill, but probably the impact driver most often. My only complaint is that in the high speed drill mode, you can tell that the chuck isn't exactly centered and balanced. There is a slight wobble at high speeds, especially for longer drill bits. However this isn't noticeable for 99% of the times I have used it.

Hidden Gem

Half a year ago I started working through a temp agency as a low voltage technician, mainly running data through buildings under construction. I finally broke down and decided I need a drill of my own when I got sent out to a company whose employees didn't have multiple drills to lend one out. Searching around, I wanted myself a "compact" driver of some sort or another because those big 18 and 20 volt drills are a lot to carry around for someone who needs it as infrequently as a data temp. Likewise, I was having trouble deciding between a pure impact drill and a driver/drill/hammer because neither is a perfect all-rounder, and I couldn't afford to get both. In comes this beauty inventing the driver/drill/impact category of tools. The only other drill I've found with an impact _mode_ is the monstrous Bosch 26618, an 18-volter without a clutch like the 3RILL. Obviously wasn't an option. Before finding this "3RILL" I had never heard of Rockwell before. Due to all the glowing reviews that actually looked legitimate, I gave them a chance. Immediately was impressed open receiving the product. I didn't even know about the "Free batteries for life." warranty program, or the USB port on the charger. In use on the job site, it performs all the menial tasks I've put it up to admirably. Being able to switch from drilling to impact mode so quickly is a huge time saver when you must repeatedly do one after the other in a building with hundreds of rooms. With the right bit it'll go through studs like butter. Impact mode drives self tappers quickly then tightens it up against the stud without pulling through as quickly as driving mode. Lag bolts and togglers are a snap just the same. This tool isn't going to win any spec wars. Compared to other single-function drills in this price range, it's noticeably more heavy, has slower RPM, and/or provides less torque. It'll do 90% of anything you'd need a drill for short of masonry, but when you're not expected to have the whole jobbox in the back of your car this tool practically essential for people with a smaller toolbag.A somewhat secondary and smaller review on the Battery charger - this thing is nice! Both green and red LEDs make it easy to read the status from afar. It'll wait for batteries to cool down before charging to prevent damage, and even has an automatic repair mode. The USB port is a nice feature which upon seeing makes you wonder why it isn't on ALL battery chargers.

I saw the infomercial that Rockwell ran prior to Christmas, I knew that it would not perform as shown. My wife bought me one for Christmas, I have used it on several projects since. My biggest complaint is the lack of power driving screws. It can not complete driving a 3" screw, it just quits. I have tried screwdriver, low speed drill, and impact driver settings with no luck. I have completed sinking a 3" screw with my Milwaukee M12 driver once the 3rill quits (same size/voltage tool) .I have called Rockwell to discuss my 3rill on two occasions. Both times Rockwell has gone thru the owners manual with no offer to check the tool at their service center. The last words from them was maybe I expected to much.

Battery warranty not all it is cracked up to be.

We like the drill; however, the battery situation is another subject. We paid $129 for this in Feb. 2012 after reading all the information and impressed by what we thought would be lifetime guaranty of the batteries. Our batteries all of a suddendon't hold a charge and when put on the charger, the green light (fully charged) comes on without less than a minute on both batteries, then barely able to use the drill for 5 minutes and have to try recharging again. I had read the batteries hold a charge for 2 years............ well, we found out what THAT meant. After two years, forget them. You have to send back the batteries, then pay $6.95 shipping PER battery. I asked what happens if it is NOT the battery, but the charger. They said, 'send back the batteries and you can purchase a new charger for $39.95 (and I assume more shipping costs). At the current price of $75 for the whole unit, it wouldn't be worth it. I will NEVER order another Rockwell product: #1 because of this experience and #2 after having to endure that loud and obnoxious info-commercial when you call customer service......... 'ROCK this ROCK that ROCK...' I was ready to put a rock down his throat.

From the Manufacturer

The 3RILL is an impact driver, two-speed drill, and screwdriver - three awesome tools in one. Never before has a tool of this size been able to cover such a wide range of drilling and driving applications. In Impact mode, the 3RILL pounds out 800-Inch pounds of torque driving force. When used as a Drill, the driving speed tops out at 2200 rpm. The 1/4-Inch quick-change hex chuck makes changing from drilling to driving bits a snap. In screw driving mode, the clutch can be set as low as three inch pounds of torque. This means the 3RILL can drive even the smallest most delicate brass screws without damage, then instantly change and drive a huge lag bolt like a monster. The 3RILL weighs less than three pounds, and is well balanced allowing the user to perform all applications comfortably. This torque on demand Li-Ion 12-volt all-in-one drill and drive machine will lead the pack with its efficient design and performance.
