RED LIGHT OF DEATH AND NO CUSTOMER SERVICE
I was using this product Until recently. Was valuable to me until the red light appeared.Turned to google for trouble shooting and was first shocked to find many people with the same problem and second absolutely nothing from the company in terms of a solution to this problem.Tonnes of backed up data maybe lost due to this failure. Not sure if its the hard drive or the board attached to the hd. So ill have to buy an external enclosure and power it up onto my laptop via a usb to see whether I can recover the family photos and videos. I will never buy Wd products again. Will even go to the extent of inquiring if any new laptops i buy have a wd made hard drive and stay well clear.

Been reliable for over two years, but so slow to use.
I've had the drive now for over two years, though the drive still functions as it should - it is really not at all quick and even logging into the user interface is a slow process. Its ok for backing up photos etc but don't expect it to be a quick job of putting them all on there to begin with. The cloud idea is good but bear in mind that it is limited to your upload speed from out of the home - in my case it is around 0.8 Mbps upload so if I want to remotely access any larger document/video/picture etc then it is slow going.I have personally found though that it does what I want and has been reliable. I would not buy another because of the slow speed, the slow and basic user interface and the cloud storage is just too much of a pain from the office to be of any decent use (not when compared to dropbox, onedrive and google drive which are all a load quicker to access).Sorry WD, its two stars from me.

Very good at the basics
As always, Prime delivery was superb. Ordered 6pm Fri arrived 8am Sat.The drive is neat, quiet, not littered with flashing lights. Perfect for connecting to network and forgetting. The drive was immediatley recognised by my Win7 64-bit machines, PS3, TV etc, and ready to receive data. True plug and play. The setup was pretty simple, not much to do. Web UI is a bit slow.Copying data was as expected for non-direct attached drives, and I got about 11Kb/s though my ageing O2 10/100 router over lan. Once populated, it was immediatley clear that read performance was stellar compared to PC-PC sharing and WMP media sharing. My problem came when I decided to change the IP to static and I suspect the O2 router, which's software is terrible, is partly to blame. At first I just told the router to always give the same IP. But now the NAS was not accesible. Drive was booted, flashing green, I could ping the device name and IP, but you could not open the folder shares in Explorer, access the Web UI or even detect with WD Discovery. WD tray icon showed the drive but had n/a for usage or temp. Countless reboots of the drive (disconnect lan, wait for inactivity, power cycle). Tried using the rest button on the back, but that only resets password and IP to DHCP. Still not stable.Eventually I discovered that after reboot, it was available for about 10min, then would return to thd ignoring me state. So I downloaded the firmware, and did a re-flash after a reboot. Now the drive is stable and working fine. I really have no idea why the drive was able to send me status emails and answers ping, but was unavailable to Windows, HTTP and discovery software. But this is the crux. It is easy to setup, works well (fast reads for media and files), and is a good amount of always available storage for a good price. BUT the lack of direct connect and limited control beyond the basic Web UI leaves me concerned that this is not a good data vault, just a really good media server. And I can only assume it uses proprietry file system, so you could not just pull the drive out and connect to PC to recover data (or populate the drive).Overall I am pleased, but this really is just a soho cloud, and stick to direct USB or proper NAS devices for safekeeping.

Great home storage device
Great device, works brilliantly! Streams to my TV, and the WD App meant that on a recently holiday, I used my iPhone whilst in Italy to upload my photo's (over a cafe's WiFi) to my NAS box at home!!Quite user friendly, although I work in IT, I would say that a beginner may struggle a little bit, but it's relatively easy to use and there's always google and instructions to use!Only downside is that sometimes when streaming, it disconnects and many device's DLNA does not support a seek function, meaning that you can only play or stop - no forward or rewind functions work!! Very fustrating, but could be the home network (but only happens on streaming via TV)All in all, a great box. Lacking a USB3 port which could have been very very handy to use, rather than the limiting speed of you network to upload!!

So far so good
I read about fifty reviews of this product before buying it. The reviews are very touch and go and it felt like a gamble, but in the end I risked it because nothing else on the market (a NAS) had this capacity and this price. I use it as an offsite backup for my main NAS. I noted the near-universal disdain for the enclosed software bundle and decided not to bother with it. After all, your computer has an operating system doesn't it? So drag and drop if you need to people! That said I went one further and used the backup firmware in my main NAS (Netger ReadyNAS Duo - can't speak too highly of it!!) and set up some backup jobs on there. This in effect tells my main NAS to backup selected folders to this WD NAS (or 'Livebook' to use it's marketing name).I have to say it seems to do a workman-like job. It's not noisey, and it's reasonably fast (remember I don't use the bundled 'backup' software). My backup is mediated by my home hub which transmits much more slowly than if I connected the two NAS' via an ethernet switch and even so I find it fine. I left it on overnight the first time it backed up over a terrabyte, and thereafter I just backup the changes which can be done in an hour or so at most. I haven't had to do a restore yet (thank God) but I am assuming that since the write is ok the read will be ok too.
