Better than expected

I was very pleasantly surprised by this box set. Usually when such multi-disc unofficial bootleg sets are put together there are one or two discs / shows that drag down the total quality level. Such was the case with the AC/DC Bon Scott era box set put out by the same company responsible for this one. However, for those of us used to and appreciative of such unofficial audio sources (which can very enormously in quality), this one is pretty much consistently good all the way through. My heart sank as the first moments of Disc 2 (the Rio show in '85) kicked in but the levels even out after a while and it does get better. However, it's the least of the six discs on offer. The rest of the shows are all good to very good radio sources by the sounds of it and have that classic soundboard quality - a bit dry and clinical but at least everything is audible. Like all of the other 'grey market' AC/DC radio broadcast sets released in recent years, these recordings are not for audiophiles - do not expect official release quality audio. But for those used to wading into bootleg waters, this is damn good set with some great performances from the early Brian Johnson era of the band. Hardcore AC/DC fans will love it.

Hehehe, ooooh, yeah

Brilliant package! Yes, the audio quality isn't perfect but why would anyone expect that on an unofficial release? I bought this solely for the live versions of songs from Fly On The Wall and I'm not disappointed. The packaging is nice enough and the audio is easily good enough to listen to and enjoy at high volumes. What might surprise people is just how great the band are live, with no overdubs. Other than some weird backing vocals - never their strong point - they still sound basically like the records! It's so good to hear them belting out "Shake Your Foundations" and "Fly On The Wall" and Brian's stage patter is, at times, unintentionally hilarious. "This is one from the Back in Black album...hehehe, ooooh yeah!....It's called..."Back In Black!""For under a tenner, this is a great set of discs fans of the Brian Johnson era will really love.Steven A. A Very Good Set Very Well Packaged.

So here we have a set of AC/DC radio broadcasts from the beginning of the Brian Johnson era up to and including the Ballbreaker tour. For a start lets get one thing clear these are radio broadcasts pretty much bootlegs but officially aired over the airwaves. So as such the sound quality is never going to match a studio released recording that has been properly mixed and tinkered with to get that perfect sound. Also my review is based on listening to these through my very basic sound system. Anyone that remembers going to record fairs and spending time going through boxes of bootleg tapes of your favourite artists will know how hard it was to find good sounding recordings. So to start with the packaging. Well it is excellent to be honest the box is very sturdy and the cardstock has a nice glossy finish. Each of the cd's is in a matt finished gatefold card sleeve with a brief description on the inner surface of the concert being aired. The cd's themselves are propper pressed silver cd's and not cdr's so this is a good quality product. Now the actual concerts, I've currently listened to five out of the six discs and can say I am very happy thus far. The sound quality varies a bit from disc to disc as is to be expected. The worst "for me" being discs one and two but they are by no means unlistenable. Disc three and four are the best sounding so far with disc three being the best imo having the best balance of all aspects of the bands live sound. Disc five starts a bit iffy as the sound peaks and troughs a bit until the soundman finally gets the level right and from then on it is great. I am expecting more of the same from disc six and will update this review when I have finally listened to it. So to sum up all in all a very good package, well priced and plays pretty well. Like I mentioned earlier not as good as an official release but for radio broadcast/ bootleg one of the better sets out there. I have given four stars to reflect that the sound quality dips a bit on the first two discs otherwise great value and a good listen.Like all reviews this my opinion only read other reviews and make a choice then on whether or not to give it a go.
