C++ book

C++ . Plenty of examples of C++.

Great for CLI programming.

Great if you have done some programming. Only really covers Command Line Interface (CLI) programming but covers it well. Of no real use if you want to learn Windows programming using Microsoft's implementation of C++ and Visual Studio.

Written with beginners in mind

If you are new to C++ programming and want to learn the basics from a book written with an absolute beginner in mind then this is the book for you.There are 10 Chapters, each with 8 topics. Topics are described and demonstrated with source code and expected output. I was impressed that all of the source code compiled without errors - not so common in programming books these days. For the first 9 chapters the compiler used is the cross-platform GCC and user interaction is via a command prompt. There are instructions for installing and using GCC in the first chapter.I found the last chapter to be the most interesting. This describes the creation of a graphical UWP app to generate random Lotto numbers, controlled by a mouse. The chapter introduces the XAML language which is used to define the GUI, and requires Microsoft Visual Studio (you can use the free edition).The only problem that I encountered when following this book occurred in the last chapter: with the latest Visual Studio and Windows 10 updates as of April 2023, Visual Studio would not create a UWP app until I had updated to Windows 11. Once I had updated then everything went smoothly exactly as per the book. I consider this a problem with the tools rather than the book, so no stars deducted.If you don't want to use Windows 11, Visual Studio or XAML and you are only interested in the C++ then this chapter can still be of use - before updating I extracted the C++ code then, using what I had learned in earlier chapters, created a console app to generate random Lotto numbers, controlled from the keyboard.

A really great introduction to C++

I found this book a good introduction to C++. Having done some programming before didn't really help as C++ is quite different to C, PASCAL..... I do think that there should be more information on setting up your environment (Windows, Linux) as both can be used for most of the book. Where the book lets the newby down is the transition from text files (cpp written on Notepad, Nano or other text editor) and straight into Windows Visual Studio. This could (and should) be a gradual transition along with better instructions on how to configure it (current instructions are old and out of date and therefore don't work!

Nice little book that covers the basics.

It's short, but also cheap, it'll get you up to speed on the simple stuff - but what more can you ask of a 200 page book? Only thing I would change is to focus on Linux, rather than windows usage, but the C++ language remains the same in any case.

An excellent book for beginners, due to its very specific format and style.

An excellent book for beginners, due to its very specific format and style.The layout is very pleasant : clear and breathing, with colours and highlights, clear and simple style.Instead of lengthy and tedious developments around a piece of listing like many (all ?) other books, each concept is explained and illustrated over a double page, through a piece of code constructed step by step. That proves very efficient and pleasant for easy and quick progress.Of course with 185 pages only you do not have all of C++ , and the format becomes too tight for complex topics, especially for the last lessons which provide more a recipe to reproduce than an understanding for creating by your own. This book needs to be completed by another source going deeper.However I definitely recommend for beginners, as it makes you quickly autonomous over a very wide range of programming, and does give you the desire to broaden your knowledge and understanding of C++.

Great guide

You do need some prior coding knowledge, but if familiar, not a problem.
