Are these firm enough to use for heavy squats?

Can be used for heavy squats, the slant board can hold up to 440 lbs.

I have extremely tight hamstrings and calves. Could I use this backwards to help me squat with my feet being supported?

Use it with the tall end at your toes to stretch. Turn them around so the tall part is under your heel when you do squats or actual excercises. If used during an exercise with your toes pointed up it puts too much stress on your Achillies tendon and you can rupture it.

Do I need to buy two so I can have the max slant board height for both feet?

A set of slant boards can only meet the maximum angle of 34° for one foot. If you want to meet the maximum angle of your feet of 34°, you need to buy two sets.
