Computers as Components: Principles of Embedded Computing System Design (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Architecture and Design)

Other texts I've enjoyed were written in a clear, direct, and pragmatic manner. This one comes across as "professorial". Found the author to be overly verbose and not very clear.

This book is a comprehensive one with full usefull and practical technical details and applications. Nice and good work and Thanks!

I bought this for Microprocessors class. Great source of knowledge.

Easy to enjoy, chapter 2 instructions sets, chapter 3 CPU and chapter 4 bus-based computer system covers basics of hw. the figures/diagrams are distinguish-ably simple and illustrative in making good point, chapter 6 focus on OS, overall the book covers a wide range of subjects from CPU to design and performance without being too academic, seemly to have particular strength on BUS and video related topics, many of the example code using ARM instructions.

Author Marilyn Wolf (Author), has done an outstanding job of writing a 3rd edition of a book that provides useful insight into the parts of embedded computing applications that most directly affect the design decisions faced by embedded computing designers.Author Wolf, begins by setting the stage for the study of embedded computing system design. In addition, the author discusses instruction sets--the programmer's interface to the hardware. She then describes aspects of CPUs that do not directly relate to their instruction sets. The author then, covers computing platforms created by using microprocessors, I/O devices, and memory components. Next, she shows you how to create programs for embedded processors. In addition, the author introduces two fundamental abstractions that allow you to build complex applications on microprocessors: the process and the operating system. She continues by showing you the techniques that are required to create complex embedded systems. Finally, the author introduces some basic concepts in parallel and distributed embedded computing systems.This most excellent book expands the range of processors through examples. Perhaps more importantly, the author has reorganized the coverage of networks and multiprocessors to provide a more unified view of these closely related topics.
