Better than expected

When you read about the troubles that some people have getting this device setup, or the caveats on the manufacturer's web site, it almost makes you want to shy away from buying this product. But I did, and I couldn't be more pleasantly surprised. If someone takes the time to download the latest software from SIIG's web site, and follows the instructions to install everything properly, it works great. Yes, there are going to be some devices that don't work because the drivers aren't written in such a way that they'll be compatible, but I was able to make some very obscure hardware work just fine without any difficulty.I purchased this primarily so I'd have a wireless way of controlling a Mackie TT24 audio mixer, and if you believed the reviews and forum posts online you'd think that it wasn't possible to control the mixer in this way, but I got it to work with very few hassles. The only exception was that I was trying to install a device driver meant for Windows XP on Windows 8, which required jumping through some hoops due to Microsoft's increasingly stringent requirements, but in the end it works great, even though the same device doesn't even work when plugged directly into a Windows 8 computer. For someone looking to control a USB device over a network -- be that wirelessly or over a long distance, this product is certainly at least worth a shot. Just be careful to follow the manufacturer's installation instructions to the letter.

Hard to install, doesn't work with virtual machine

I'm looking for a way to access a physical USB device in my virtual Windows instance. I'm using CentOS Linux, and there's not a clear way [suggestions wanted] to pass multicast traffic. This device uses a multicast to find all of their devices on the network, so I'm stuck. The "hard to install" applies to Windows 7. There is a version of the product that supports Windows 7 (the CD doesn't), but it requires that the firmware be updated FIRST. But the program that updates the firmware doesn't work on Windows 7. Fortunately, I was able to find a Windows XP system to upgrade the firmware. If I had only a Windows 7 box, I'd be SOL.My plan was to use this device to read and update Sentinel HASP keys. When I connect it (from a physical Windows 7 64-bit system), it says "might not work". The software is right -- it doesn't work.I'm giving it 3 stars for the installation pain. The fact that I can't use it isn't their fault. Or maybe it is -- why allow one kind of USB device and not another?

works for what it is, if you know what you have

This device works exactly as described, let me start there. It has some limitations (all devices must be on the same subnet), but if you can work within those parameters it will function exactly as described.I have it connected via a switch in my rack, with access points on a Windows 7 laptop as well as several virtual servers, all running Server OS's. I did update the firmware via an XP machine first, and the download for the firmware update includes an installer for the utility that will run in Win 7 64 bit and Server 2008 64 bit. After the update I was able to see the device (a standard Seagate external hard drive) without an issue. The device shows on the computers just as if it were connected directly.Great device as long as you know what the limitations are and what you are using it for.

Works great on local network but...

This USB server worked perfectly on a local network. The only problem is that you cannot set a gateway address. When not using DHCP, you can only set IP and subnet. The lack of gateway is the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars.NOTE: You'll probably have to download the latest version of the configuration software and firmware from SIIG's website (The included CD would not install on my Windows 7 64 machine). The downloaded version installed with no problems. The firmware upgrade was very easy. Just a matter of clicking the upgrade button and selecting the file. Clear instructions are included with the download.

Good, but not plug and play...

The current drivers and firmware I received with this USB to IP hub were outdated. It took a couple installs/uninstalls to make it work right. You need to first install the software that comes with the firmware upgrade off the website, but not the firmware yet. Then install the latest drivers/software and then update the firmware. This finally allows you to read the USB like "normal". Not only do you have to close it using the windows safely remove hardware tool, you have to disconnect it using the USB server program. It'll work for what i have to do, but not as easy as it sounded.

Works good, but...

This device installed fine. I have it installed on both and XP and Windows 7 64bit computers. I am using it for an external hard drive that I can access from both computers. It works. It doesn't seem that the throughput if real fast, but it works for backup and shared files. The biggest issues is that you cannot access it from both computers at the same time. You have to run the 'server' software and leave it open. Then you have to 'connect' when you want to use it and then 'disconnect'. If you leave it connected, the other computer cannot access it. This is pretty cumbersome.Other than that, it works.

works well, but maybe not over wifi G

This product works well. They claim you can use this over wifi.I tried it in combo with a Cisco WBP54g Wireless G Bridge. It didn't really work. I'm assuming it will over Wireless N.All up I'm still extremely happy with this.Great value to extend USB for printing.I'm using it for a wireless presenter I needed to move to a podium (where the computer is in the back and the RF would not have reached).

Complete Garbage.

This thing is a total waste of time.If the USB device you want to use is not on the same IP subnet as your computer then it won't work. It also relies on mDNS to work... which if you block this type of traffic for security reasons, renders the device inoperable. This is not specified anywhere in their documentation.Their support staff on filing a ticket took a full week to get back to me and all they said was "... must be on the same subnet."Don't waste your time with this company. After also purchasing a Express Card to SATA adapter from them which also had poor software and poor support issues. Never Again!
