Would this tool be too heavy for a petite female (with small hands) to hold/use in the garden? I'm asking because one reviewer mentioned that. Thanks.

No, I have small hands and am 70 years old. I don't have a lot of strength left in my hands, but I was able to cut right through a pot full of Cannas stalks this fall when I brought the plant in for the winter. I love that it allows me to do things that I would not have the strength to do. It is easier for me to use than a pair of pruners to cut through heavier plant stalks. I don't find it heavy at all.

Can it be used in a sawing motion in garden dirt to cut through weeds that have runners? I want to cut out small blocks of weeds at a time.

This knife can slice through buried tree roots you can’t see but can only feel. Weed runners would be no match for the Hori Hori.

The numbers from our scale are very close to Barbara's numbers with 10.1 oz for the knife and 4.25 oz for the sheath and 14.4 oz combined.  The sharpening stone is an additional 1.0 oz if you bring it.  Several camping friends have replaced their camping shovels with this Hori Hori Knife especially on backpacking trips.
