Q: Does the metal get hot in direct sun? I don't want the birds to burn their feet

I hang mine partly in the sun with afternoon shade. Birds are always at the feeders but then again the high tempertures here is only in the 90s.

Q: Can this be used under a feeder as a seed catcher?

I suppose it could. But if you hang it off one of the perches, it would be off balance. And the birds would go to the tray and that would further tip the tube and seeds would pour out. So . . . my answer is maybe. But I wouldn't do it. Let the birds dig through the grass to get the errant seeds. Unless the feeder is on a high rise balcony and the seeds are spilling on the balcony below. Then you have other issues to deal with.

Q: Are the chains immovable or are they loose so that I would have to hang them by grabbing the S hook?

Although the chains could be removed / attached at the tray - it would be much easier to hang from the S hook. The four chains are “clipped” at the corners.
