Works! And Works Well
There's not much to see here -- as in this thing is tiny. Obvious choice if you're traveling, but also an obvious choice of you're looking to have VoIP service and don't want to take up a lot of space on your desk. Even has mounting holes to stick it on a wall or backboard (which is exactly what I do with my networking devices).Configuration is easy, although this particular package does not come with documentation. You must visit the Grandstream web site and download the PDF. Documentation is acceptable, but if you are new to VoIP, budget some time to get acquainted with it. You may find help in your VoIP provider's set-up guides, even if they don't specifically have documentation for this particular model. The web interface is simple and speeds deployment. There's also a command line telnet interface. Two issues I had with it, one is that the DHCP client on it doesn't offer a way to release the IP without burning down the entire config (it was my fault it ended up with that IP in the first place). The bigger issue is that the ordering of preferred encoding profiles doesn't necessarily work well with my provider. I had to hard set everything to one specific codec in order to get audio on outbound calls. I don't know if this is a provider issue or an issue related to this unit, but if you buy it and have problems with your audio on outbound calls, try that.Five stars though; can't beat the price nor the performance. This unit replaces my trusty InterEdge that died an untimely death during a thunderstorm. There would have been a bit of a funeral, but after seeing the Grandstream in action, the Interedge was tossed into the trash and quickly forgotten. Love can be so fickle.

Could not get it to register with voip.ms
I was replacing a Linksys SPA1001 that gave me 4 years of trusty service but finally died. The HT701 interface is simple and overall it looks like a pretty good unit, however after spending countless hours trying different configuration options suggested by voip.ms support as well as GrandStream support I'm finally throwing in the towel. Oh yeah, I have tried with two different units thinking maybe one was bad, but neither would work.I'm sending them back and purchasing a new Linksys (hopefully I won't get a Chinese knockoff, I hear they are all over Amazon and eBay).

Nice cheap unit but need some technical skills to set up
Shipped as a barebones unit with no instruction manual. If you are uncomfortable looking up manuals on the internet and manually inputting network settings from your VoIP provider, this product is probably not for you. This unit works with VoIP.ms, but it took a little tweaking. Specifically, the unit did not register with the VoIP server until the registration expiration time was set to 2 minutes from the default value of 3. Other than that, the unit has a very small footprint and is inobtrusive, and appears to work well for both inbound and outbound calls. The main reason I got this unit is so that I can use e911 with my VoIP service. Soft phones do not support e911 and will send dispatch to your mobile location regardless of the e911 address on file with your provider.

Buyer beware. ATA may be locked!
While the Grandstream GS-HT701 I received from Amazon.com was brand new and in a sealed box, the device was manufactured and branded for BasicTalk. As such, the unit was locked to BasicTalk's own servers. As such, it's useless with any other provider, unless you hack the software. I use voip.ms for my provider, so I had to do a lot of research into finding out how to hack the software on this device to unlock from BasicTalk. Therefore, unless you're using it for BasicTalk service, you may wish to consider another device or ensure with the supplier that the device isn't locked to a specific voip provider.Just as an fyi, after unlocking the device and updating with Grandstream's latest firmware, the device has been functioning flawlessly.

Support somewhat lacking
Basic functions okay. Had phantom rings. Support on advanced features slow and unclear. The manual was not much help either.

Great product for a good price.
Great product with a good finish and looks strong even if it is made with light plastic.I cancelled my land line as they were charging $30 per month. I went with voip-ms and now it costs me $1 per month plus 1 cent per minute. I will probably save about $25 per month with this device, so it will pay for itself within only 1 month.Physical installation is very simple, just plug it to the router and plug a phone to it. However, configuration is tricky if you are not knowledgeable with the technology and the terminology. Basically you configure the ATA by setting the account number, password and server ip address that voip-ms (or other provider) gives you. You access the ATA with a computer by typing ip address in your browser. You can obtain its ip address by dialing *** with your phone or look at the setting that your router assigned to the ATA.Voice quality is excellent. It sounds just like my wired line. I actually connected the ATA to a phone plug in my room so that all phone plugs work around the house. Make sure you disconnect your "house" from the wired line coming from your landline provider. It is a small box-connector near the electricity consumption meter.

Super cheap and easy set-up!
Pros:Small, inexpensiveFirst - I like the fact that there is no users manual - it IS posted online. To complain about something you are just going to thrown away after using once...isn't that the pure definition of wasteful? Not printing and including the manual saves costs and the environment - its a win/win/won for everyone! This device was significantly cheaper than other ATA devices from other companies, and I really only needed one FXS port. I attached a 4 handset home wireless phone system to the standard phone jack and we were up and running in 15 min (including time to get a drink)Great little device. Highly recommended.
