Would this work for a garage door & how is would it be supported ?

I added this to my shed by cutting a 9x8" rectangular hole, and trimming the back of the vent with a Dremel because a stud blocked part of the hole. Before attaching to the shed, I sprayed the front with DEFT Adhesion Promoter so it could later be painted. Pieces of Gorilla Tape covered the four corners until GOOP adhesive on the back had dried. The tape was then removed, and the perimeter sealed with DAP Dynaflex calk. Finally, I carefully painted over the vent and dried calk to match the shed. The plastic vent is stronger and much thicker than sheet metal, and the small slats keep most bugs out and add overall strength.

How many square inches of net free area?

From the item photo, it is labeled "21 square inches", which seems like a plausible net free area amount given the overall roughly 10x10 inch outer dimensions.

Does this allow wind to come through it into the building?

I wouldn't say wind, but air flow will come into the building. We used these in a small shed in the back yard that was getting moldy. My husband cleaned it, removed the mold, and wanted to have some air flow in the building to resist the mold build up from dampness. I guess we will find out in the spring if it worked. I recommend these vents as they were easy to install and look nice.
