Love It !
Was born and raised in Southern Oklahoma and you don't hear Cherokee spoken where I live. You hear English and Spanish. So I decided to get this book and learn it. Perhaps teach it to my son , and nieces and nephews. I have had it for about a week now and I am already able to say quite a few things. With this book and the internet is a good combination when learning.(cherokeelessons.com is Western) Leaning with just the book by would be difficult. When using the book , and the internet. You need to pay close attention to which is Eastern , and Western Dialect. or you'll be confused on how to say certain words. I really have enjoyed the exercises in the book. Over all I give it 4 stars , for the simple fact there is no audio ,CD or DVD that comes with it.Wa-do!Do-na-da-go-hv-i!-Masi

Decent, but Outdated.
I had been searching for a Cherokee language for some time before I found this book, and I was rather excited once I found this book. I have considerable experience with different language instruction styles, and this one is rather stale and moot. Essentially, it is concise, but it is an older style of teaching and I would go so far as to say that this book has been rendered useless by the many other Cherokee language texts. It was written in 1976. Need I say more? There are few dialogues, the lessons are dull, and the transliterations are confusing. Also, the excercises are exhausting, occassionally using words that are found no where else in the entire book. Cherokee has a unique phonology, and I suggest to the serious learner do more research on the text that will be used. I recommend the 'Cherokee-English Dictionary' written by Durbin Feeling. It not only uses a much better vocabulary, but also teaches about grammar and the incredibly complex verbal system that is employed by this language.

Culture Recovery
Pretty good book. But it is hard to learn how to pronounce words when I can't HEAR it. Also I have no one to practice with. However, it is in great shape and delivered promptly. I am trying to learn Cherokee to teach my Granddaughter and Grandson.

Informative but not terribly user-friendly
This book was actually purchased for my 9 year old daughter, who is enthralled with the Cherokees. It appears to be chock-full of information about the Cherokee language, however I don't know how she has the patience to read any of it; the font appears to be from an old typewriter, and it's just not a very readable book. That having been said, it seems to be quite thorough in its treatment of the language of the Cherokee and for someone wanting to learn the language there is plenty of material here to study. It would be wonderful to see this book updated -- there is simply not that much out there that we've been able to find on this subject.

Great book to learn Cherokee
This book is really detailed and I first flipped through it at B&N. It made Cherokee look complicated and hard to learn.BUT, I have used this as a 'step-up' book and it has been awesome. I purchased "Simply Cherokee: Let's Learn Cherokee Syllabary" at the same time and this book taught me the syllabary chart and sounds and then I can learn actual words with "Beginning Cherokee"Both of these books are highly recommended as well as cherokeenation.org and sign up for the FREE Cherokee language classes.

YES
I am so glad to have found this book. I can finally learn to speak my native tongue. Now I just need to find something that is on disk so I can hear how the letters are used. this book explains it. But I am dyslexic.. It makes it difficult to get the understanding sometimes. Thank you Ruth Bradley Holmes. Does anyone know of a disc or video that would allow a person to hear learn verbally?Thank you.

Be prepared
The Cherokee language is a difficult language to learn. However, this book is perfect for beginners. It explains pronunciation with guides and even his conjugation charts in the back of the book. I am using this book to learn the language of my people and I couldn't be happier with my book selection.
