Description

DVD. All roads have led to this. Forty-one years in the making, the R40 Live tour took a very real journey back through time. Beginning with the grand design: a state-of-the-art stage set that pivots, rolls and dives, and brings Clockwork Angels in to bombastic, colorful life before marching stridently back in time (through theatre stages, a panoply of band and fan shots, the accrued memories of a life spent playing live) to a mocked-up school gym and the band playing there; a solitary bass amp set on the chair behind Geddy Lee, a mirror ball spiraling crazily above, casting thin rods of light like a light rain across the crowd, "Working Man" coming to a shuddering halt as the band's beginning becomes their end. Rush recorded and filmed R40 Live over two sold-out shows in the band's hometown of Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on June 17 & 19, 2015 in the middle of their R40 Live 35-date North American tour. R40 Live had the trio of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart, performing a career-spanning live retrospective, celebrating their 40+ years together. The epic live shows by the Rock Hall of Famers were captured with 14 cameras to present the band feature-film style. R40 Live audio was produced by Rush & David Botrill, and mixed by David Botrill (Tool, Muse); the film was directed by Dale Heslip, and produced by Allan Weinrib. The live photograph on the cover of R40 was shot by baseball Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, who captured the band in a rare moment when both Geddy Lee and Alex LIfeson were on Neil Peart's drum kit riser.

Such an Amazing Show

I missed this tour, I didn't realize how few shows they were going to do, and that it would be their last tour. I would have loved to have seen them one more time, and this DVD gave me that experience.I marvelled at these three giants in their industry, masters of their prospective arenas, and virtuoso's of their instruments. All three are showcased very well in the show, with it starting from Clockwork Angels, and going back in time through all their albums. Every single one of them still had their chops, and it shows with this show in Toronto. If you have never seen them live, this should be a great place to start as they touch base with all the songs that made them famous (they really only had 1 'hit song' and the highest charting of any of them was Geddy Lee singing Take Off for Bob & Doug McKenzie), the songs that that made them better musicians and pushed them into another level of musicianship that will never be touched by the likes of another three piece group anywhere. Many have tried, but all fall short of Rush for filling the air with layers upon layers of music. And just for good measure, they pull it off live for you to enjoy right here.

Fantastic Performance and probably the best filming of a Rush concert. Rush will live on in History!

What fantastic filming and sound editing of this show. Being a Rush fan for many years, I have listened to all of their live recordings and I would have to say that "Time Machine" "Clockwork Angels" and now R40 have to be the best recorded shows they ever made, but this one stands above the rest, because of the unique camera angles and the mixing of the audio track were just superbly fantastic. A lot of concert DVD's jump around and you don't get a chance to view each performer in certain climatic sections of a song such as a Neil Peart drum roll through XYZ, Geddy doing one of his amazing Bass lines that are such a big part of the band. And of course Alex, being Alex, whether it him being goofy on stage to get the fans going or watching him scorch through a solo, or watch him play a beautiful intro into "Closer of the Heart". The one thing that really irritates me are the people who have written reviews stating that Geddy's voice is gone. I went to the San Jose Show, just a few shows left before they ended the tour and probably their career's, but Geddy's voice was fine and as sharp as ever, and watching other shows that were recorded during the tour on youtube, you could tell he was singing very strongly. I just believe that Geddy unfortunately had either a cold or his voice was a little strained because in certain parts of the two shows that they played to record this DVD, you could tell he was strong on certain songs and in some others his voice was a bit strained. It's unfortunate that he wasn't exactly 100%, but the man still can still sing without a doubt, and judging him on one performance and saying that he was done, was incredibly inaccurate! At the San Jose show my daughter couldn't believe how good they sounded and she told me, this sounds exactly like their records, and yes she was right. I have seen Rush at least 10 times in my life and I have never been disappointed. If anything they have gotten better and better over the years. So what a way to go out in a bang, with a stunningly recorded DVD. I am just so glad that I got a chance to see them one last time (the tickets sold out in 10 minutes-BTW for that show I went to) There will never be another band like them. Three incredibly talented gentleman who just never slowed down........they just got better with age. I will miss them, but I will be very happy to say that I got to see them one last time. Anyway, this is the Blu-Ray of Blu-Ray's for any Rush fan with "Clockwork Angels" and "Time Machine" right behind them. Just fantastic!! Thank you Geddy, Alex, and Neil for inspiring me to want to be a novice guitarist and drummer. You just made me want to pick up a guitar and try to figure out every trick you ever pulled off. But I will certainly never be at your level of expertise, but is anybody at your ability level? I don't think so.......that is my opinion only. Go get this everyone, you will be very happy you did.And thank you RUSH for an incredible 40 years of amazing musicianship!!

Sums up their 40+ year music history perfectly!

40 years of RUSH in one concert, presented in a way where the viewer traces backwards the bands musical history as the staging and instruments change with the music. Rush has been around so long their sound has evolved several times, but never their musicianship which is still top notch. The band walks through their musical arsenal from current to their first album with the precision and musicianship expected and the sound mix is absolutely awesome! Previous RUSH concert sound has been hit or miss but it all comes together here in the best sounding live performance yet.No expense was spared for this production, the lighting and sound production are superb and shows the band never stagnated but always remained current with technology. All RUSH fans have to add this final masterpiece to their collection and any new RUSH fans should start here, with the cumulative work of the band presented by the band exactly as they wanted for their final concert. The song selection is spot-on, sadly some favorites are missing but with such a large catalog to cover as they span 40+ years, it seems there is no way to include everything.I have watched this concert several times and it never gets old, the sound alone is worth the price but when you add the full concert production and band interaction, it's just a great way to enjoy them always. RUSH went out on top of their game, still playing the same intricate, difficult parts as easily as ever and sounding like perfection. This is no band that covers their sound in post production either, the musicianship in RUSH may be the best 3-peice band ever, each an expert and virtuoso in their chosen instrument. Watching them end their careers (as RUSH) this way, with a perfect game so to say, sums up their career... perfection!
